Liquid soap

Liquid soap was first patented in 1865 by William Shepphard. The industry took off from there with companies like Minnetonka, Colgate, and Palmolive. Today, there are almost as many formulations and recipes for natual liquid soap as there are for bar soap.

When it comes to handcrafting liquid soap, different oil combinations, methods, and processes can create everything from light hand soap, to shampoos and even gels. All soap recipes are based on fats/oils reacting with an alkali.

The biggest difference between making liquid soap and bar soap is the alkali used to achieve saponification. When making bar soap, the alkali is sodium hydroxide. Liquid soap requires the alkali to be potassium hydroxide. It’s a soap thing.
